Watch again: Gov. DeWine gives latest updates on coronavirus pandemic as parts of Ohio start to reopen

The state department of health reports more than 18,000 total cases of COVID-19, with more than 1,000 deaths

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Gov. Mike DeWine gave the latest updates Friday regarding Ohio's response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The state department of health reports more than 18,000 total cases of COVID-19, with more than 1,000 deaths. There have been more than 700 new cases each of the last two days.

DeWine was joined, as always, by Lt. Gov. Jon Husted and Department of Health Director Amy Acton. Topics of discussion revolved around the state gradually beginning its reopening process today, as well as DeWine and Dr. Acton choosing to extend the stay-at-home order through May 29, now referred to as a "Stay Safe Ohio" order.

While polls have shown more than 80% of Ohioans approve of the governor's job performance during this crisis, the minority against him is becoming more pointed in its criticisms. This morning, State Rep. Nino Vitale (R-Urbana) wrote a Facebook post ripping the extension of the order, while also calling Acton a "globalist health director" and falsely claiming face mask coverings don't work.
