Cases of RSV on rise at Cleveland Clinic

Hospitals are seeing more cases of RSV, a serious respiratory illness.

CLEVELAND — The flu season is in full swing, but there is another illness on the rise.

Hospitals are seeing more cases of human respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a serious respiratory illness.  Doctors say RSV is very contagious the first two to four days of illness, but symptoms can continue for weeks.

RSV usually presents as minor cold-like symptoms. However, it can get worse, leading to hospitalization from pneumonia.

Right now, Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital says it's experiencing a significant increase in RSV, in particular bronchiolitis. University Hospitals says while the number of flu cases continues to increase, the number of RSV cases are decreasing.

RSV spreads through the air and direct contact like touching. Its advised you stay away from people who are sick and wash your hands frequently.
