Do I have sleep apnea? Here are the symptoms to watch for

Sleep is something we never seem to get enough of.

CLEVELAND — Zzzzz... Zzzzz...

We all dream of getting more sleep.

Whether you have problems falling sleeping, or an actual sleep disorder, we want to help you get more rest!

The 3News Go! team talked to Michelle Drerup, PsyD from the Cleveland Clinic's Sleep Disorders Center. She is a sleep psychologist and behavioral sleep medicine specialist, who specializes in treating conditions like insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep apnea and more.

Sleep problems are very common. In fact, Drerup says about 10 percent of the population has symptoms of an insomnia disorder that impacts their daily functioning.

One of the topics we asked Drerup about is something a lot of people -- and their partners -- deal with: Snoring!

She says different things can cause snoring, but for some, stopping it can be as simple as changing their sleep position.

“Some people snore only when they're sleeping on their back, so maybe side sleeping might be beneficial.”

Drerup also says, some people have a narrow airway, and using an inhaler can help decrease inflammation.

Snoring may also be a sign of sleep apnea. But what are some other signs to look for, if you're concerned about sleep apnea?

“The biggest one would be if they're noticing themselves waking up gasping or feeling kind of out of breath," Drerup says. “Another symptom would be daytime sleepiness or feeling fatigued.

Drerup also notes that waking up with headaches and frequent waking to use the bathroom in the middle of the night can also be symptoms. She says it’s important to ask your doctor about any sleep problem that leaves you fatigued, sleepy and irritable.
