Families respond to University Hospitals letter, statement

"Whose head is going to roll?"

Kate and Jeremy Plants were among the hundreds of families who received a letter from University Hospitals on Tuesday and watched a video statement from its CEO.

The couple lost five embryos at Ahuja Medical Center.

“Very sterile, very you know, 'PR,'” said Jeremy Plants, who called the video insulting. “The fact that they didn’t do a regular press conference, and you know, they’re controlling the story. It’s a little too ‘quaint.’ They’re just trying to save face.”

His wife, Kate, fought cancer twice. The loss of her embryos means she can never have biological children.

“The letter might be apologetic and it might explain some answers, but there’s been a big wait between the initial story and now,” she said.

Her main concern is that families should have never been led to believe that some embryos could have been viable when they were not.

“This should’ve never happened,” she said.

Their attorney, Tom Merriman, said the news Tuesday also shows the hospital admitting to things they knew were wrong but did not fix.

“They knew that the cryotank needed maintenance and they were beginning that process,” he said, “But they didn’t remove any of the eggs or embryos yet.”

He also believes that information could have been shared weeks ago when the news first broke.

“Whose head is going to roll?” he asked.
