Ohio's first West Nile Virus human case of 2018 confirmed in Lake County

The case involves a Willoughby resident who is currently under the care of a physician.

Health officials in Lake County have confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus in the state of Ohio in 2018.

This new case involves a Willoughby resident who is currently under the care of a physician.

Last week, officials announced the detection of West Nile during a test from a Madison Township trap site on June 26.

To date, 14 other Ohio counties have reported positive tests for West Nile Virus.

“Approximately 80 percent of people who are infected with WNV will not show any symptoms, but there is no way to know in advance if you will develop an illness or not,” the Lake County Health Department says. “Those who do develop symptoms usually do so between two and 14 days after they are bitten by the infected mosquito.”

Up to 20 percent of people who become infected will have symptoms that can last for a few days to as long as several weeks.

Symptoms can include:

- Fever

- Headache

- Body aches

- Nausea

- Vomiting

- Swollen lymph glands

- Rash on chest, stomach or back
