A Northeast Ohio native is one step closer to his Major League dream, and he'll be making it not far from home.

Outfielder Mitch Longo, a graduate of Mayfield High School, will begin the 2019 season with the Akron Rubberducks, the Class-AA affiliate of the Indians. It's Longo's fourth season in pro ball, having been drafted in the 14th round by the Tribe out of Ohio University in 2016.

Longo spent last year a little farther from home, with the Single-A Lynchburg Hillcats in Virginia. In 119 games, the young prospect hit .275 with 73 runs scored and 18 stolen bases.

Longo, 24, will join Andrew Calica, Daniel Johnson, Connor Marabell, and Ka'ai Tom in the Rubberducks' opening day outfield. Johnson, who was acquired from the Washington Nationals in the Yan Gomes trade, is ranked as the Tribe's 12th-best prospect overall by MLB.com

Akron's season officially begins this coming Thursday at 6:35 p.m. from Canal Park, which is located just 45 minutes south of Mayfield.
