Investigator | City of Cleveland employees who committed homicide

Could there be another Lance Mason on the City of Cleveland payroll?

CLEVELAND — Could there be another Lance Mason on the City of Cleveland payroll?

Mayor Frank Jackson pledged to turn over the names of ex-cons employed by the city, but when Channel 3 News filed a public records request, city hall denied it.

Jackson admitted to the Investigator Tom Meyer that there are a number of violent felons employed by the city.

"I'm not going to give you names. There are city employees who have committed homicide. There are city employees who spent 15-20 years in jail for drug trafficking. There are other city employees who have done other types of crimes where they've gone to the penitentiary," Jackson said.

Like most of us, Mayor Jackson believes in second chances. He says the city's policy to hire convicted felons isn't going to change because of Lance Mason throwing away his chance to turn his life around. Mason is the former city of Cleveland employee and disgraced ex-judge who brutally beat his wife, Aisha Fraser, and is now suspected of killing her.

"Yes, there are people who work for the city of Cleveland who've committed violence. Yes. I'm not going to give you their names," Jackson said.

The Mayor instructed Channel 3 to file a public records request if we wanted the names. "We'll give you everybody," the Mayor said.

Channel 3 filed the request only to have it denied. "The city does not maintain a list of employees with felony records," the Mayor's press secretary Dan Williams said in a statement.

With no help from city hall, Channel 3 News found eight employees with criminal records.

The Mayor was asked if sex offenders are allowed to work for the city. "I don't know if we have sex offenders who work for us or child molesters or something like that," the Mayor said.
