Cuyahoga County, Ohio Department of Health warn of new scam claiming to trace COVID-19 contacts

The scam is operating on both local and state levels, as Gov. Mike DeWine issued a response on Twitter.

CLEVELAND — Another COVID-19-related scam has emerged.

The City of Cleveland Heights posted a warning on their Facebook page alerting community members to be aware of a new ploy claiming to be contact tracers.

Their post echos the Ohio Dept. of Health's warning on Twitter, which reads, "Scammers are contacting people claiming to be tracing COVID-19 contacts. While legitimate health agencies in Ohio are calling people to complete contact tracing, they will never ask for your social security or bank account information."

Gov. Mike DeWine replied to the tweet asking citizens to "take note" of the alert. "COVID19 contact tracers will NOT ask for your SSN or bank account information," he wrote.

Local agencies that may be reaching out for legitimate reasons may include the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the Cleveland Department of Public Health. "Do NOT click on links or respond to texts saying you have been exposed to COVID-19," the City of Cleveland Heights' Facebook post continues.

All suspicious calls or texts should be reported online at http://ConsumerAffairs.CuyahogaCounty.US or via phone 216-443-SCAM.
