2 women killed in Medina County crash

LITCHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash involving two vehicles on Sunday.

Troopers said it happened shortly before 10 p.m. on State Route 83, at the intersection of West Smith Road.

Houston Loyd, 84, of Wellington, Ohio was driving west on West Smith Road when troopers say he failed to yield at a stop sign and struck a 2001 PT Cruiser heading north on SR 83.

The driver of the PT cruiser, Jessica Shortland, 25, of Wakeman, Ohio and a passenger, Mary R. Curney, 36, of Elyria were ejected from the vehicle. They were sent to Medina Hospital where they later died, according to troopers.

Loyd and a passenger, Martha M. Loyd, 80, were also sent to Medina Hospital, then transferred to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center with serious injuries.

Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Medina County Sheriff's Office and Litchfield Fire and EMS. The crash remains under investigation.
