On Wednesday, the Summit County Prosecutor's Office announced the sentencing of 52-year-old Hedy Moss for the shooting of two men in Akron, which claimed the life of one.

Moss was sentenced by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Kelly McLaughlin to life in prison for the 2018 murder of Ernest Sherman.

The incident happened on Jan. 16, 2018, when Moss was in a home occupied by Sherman and James McMullen, and the three began arguing over a gun, which was allegedly stolen. Moss then shot the two men during the dispute.

Sherman was hit directly in the heart and died, but McMullen was shot and able to jump out of a second-floor window to escape.

“Hedy Moss shot two men in cold blood. She deserves to serve every day of her prison sentence,” said Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh. “I am pleased to know this lengthy sentence will help keep our community safe and brings justice to Ernest Sherman and James McMullen.”

The 52-year-old was found guilty by a jury today on the counts of Murder with a Gun Specification (a special felony), as well as Felonious Assault with a Gun Specification (a felony of the second degree).

Moss was also found guilty during a Nov. 2018 trial for Having a Weapon Under Disability, and Felonious Assault with a Gun Specification. Judge Jay Wells sentenced Moss to eight years for those charges.

On Wednesday, Judge McLaughlin ruled that the Akron woman will serve five of the eight-year sentence along with the sentence of life in prison.

Moss will be eligible for parole after serving 21 years.
