AKRON, Ohio — An Akron motorcycle officer is expected to make a full recovery after he was struck by an alleged drunk driver Saturday night.
The officer underwent leg surgery Sunday. An Akron police spokesperson says the officer suffered broken ribs and vertebrae, and a steel rod had to be added to his leg. He is expected to be released from the hospital Monday or Tuesday.
The crash happened along the Portage Path, when a Toyota Sienna blew through a stop sign on Bloomfield Avenue and struck the officer, who became pinned beneath the van.
The driver, identified as 65-year-old Corrie M. Sharpe, is charged with failure to yield, OVI, aggravated vehicular assault and child endangering.
Police say Sharpe allegedly blew a .125 on a breathalyzer test (the legal limit is .08), and her 11-year-old granddaughter was also in the van. Neither were injured.
