Akron police investigating fatal shooting in Goodyear Heights neighborhood

A 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead at Akron City Hospital.

AKRON, Ohio — Officials in Akron are investigating a fatal shooting the city's Goodyear Heights neighborhood Wednesday. 

Police responded to the area of Eastland and Bethany Avenues for reports of a shooting around 4:15 p.m. At the scene, blood and shell casings were found in the street, but police were unable to locate the victim. 

While on scene,officials learned that a 27-year-old female was being transported to Akron City Hospital by her 29-year-old boyfriend. 

Police learned that the woman had been a passenger in a car that stopped in the area of the shooting. While stopped, the woman exited the car and was involved in a verbal altercation with the suspect. The suspect then waved a handgun at the victim before firing several shots. 

At the hospital, the woman was pronounced dead as a result of a gunshot wound to her upper body.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of family. 

The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction.
