Flores-Santillan was hired to babysit the 7-week-old at her home. At around 4:30 a.m. on September 4, 2014, the infant's mother sent the child to Flores-Santillan's Akron home.

At noon that day, Flores-Santillan discovered the infant was unresponsive, and took the baby to a neighbor's home, asking them to call 911. An investigation revealed the baby had suffered a traumatic brain injury, believed to be from the child's head hitting an object while being shaken. Four days later, the baby was removed from life-support.
