Akron house fire leaves 1 dead, another hospitalized

The fire, which happened at a home on Hancock Avenue, is under investigation.

AKRON, Ohio — One person has died following an early morning house fire in Akron.

Authorities say it happened shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Hancock Avenue.

“Upon arrival, fire companies were met with heavy fire conditions and reports of someone trapped in the structure,” officials said in a press release.

One person was found dead inside the home while another was taken to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said Tuesday that the victim has been identified as 73-year-old Richard Johnson.

The fire remains under investigation.
