Two dead in Akron shooting, including 13-year-old girl

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

AKRON, Ohio — A 13-year-old girl and 24-year-old man have died following a shooting Thursday night.

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office said Akron officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 100 block of Brighton Drive around 10:50 p.m. Upon their arrival, authorities say officers found two people with apparent gunshot wounds.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. They have been identifed as 13-year-old Ty’Leia Junius and 24-year-old Derail Whisenant by the Summit County Medical Examiner. 

Authorities say a 20-year-old man was also shot, and was taken to the hospital for a leg injury that is not considered to be life-threatening.

One man has also been taken into custody as the situation remains under investigation.
