9/11 remembrance events in the Quad Cities for the 20th anniversary

Events are being held across the Quad City area to honor the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attack and the lives that were lost.

With the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the horizon, area organizations are holding events to honor the occasion.

Community groups of all kids are holding commemorative events to remember the 2,977 American lives lost in the attack and the heroism and sacrifices made by first responders.

We're keeping track of events schedules across the Quad City area for the weekend of September 11.

City of Silvis 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

  • 9:15 a.m. September 11 at the Silvis Fire Station 
  • Features a bell ceremony, wreath presentation, moments of silence, and guest speakers Neil Anderson, a Moline firefighter, and Dan Roach, a retired state trooper.

Rock Island Arsenal Flag Walk, Remembrance Ceremony

  • Marchers will gather at Memorial Field at 6 a.m. September 10 and then walk a 2.5-mile route carrying American flags, ending at the 9/11 Memorial.
  • A remembrance ceremony will follow at 10:30 a.m., with guest speaker Retired Sgt. Major Steven Blake. The ceremony will also be streamed on the Arsenal's Facebook page.

Black Box Theatre presents The Guys 

Clinton Trees Forever 9/11 20th Anniversary Commemoration

  • 8:30 a.m. at the Freedom Trees site in Clinton
  • Will include quest speaker Chuck Wehrli, a retired fire captain who responded to Ground Zero on the day, a bell ceremony, prayers, and live music.

15th Annual Trains, Planes, & Automobiles Salute to America

  • The annual Geneseo festival will feature 9/11 remembrance events, including Color Guard, a bi-plane flyover, and more.

Geneseo 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

  • September 11 at the Geneseo High School football field, registration begins at 7 a.m.
  • Climb stairs or walk on the track anytime between 8:15 a.m. and 11 a.m., and organizers encourage visitors to try and walk the equivalent of 110 stories
  • Event T-shirts will be sold on site and in downtown for $20, will all proceeds going to the Illinois Firefighters Association

9/11 Flag of Honor Across America Memorial, Galesburg

  • September 11 at 7:30 a.m. at Central Fire Station in Galesburg
  • The Knox County Teen Court, United Way of Knox County, and Galesburg Fire Department are partnering with local students for a community gathering, honoring and reading the names those who died in the attacks.

"Coming Together in Unity" with the Blackhawk Firefighters Association

  • September 11 at 1 p.m. at Sauk Valley Community College
  • The BFFA will hold a ceremony honoring the heroes of 9/11 and members of the BFFA, across 80 Illinois fire departments, who have recently passed away

Monmouth College 9/11 20th anniversary events

  • The school is holding several remembrance events open to the public over the course of a few days:
  • On the 9th at 12:30 p.m. in Dahl Chapel, the Office or Religious and Spiritual Life will hold a Vigil of Remembrance with quiet meditation and interfaith readings and music
  • On the 11th at 10 a.m., the College will hold a service at its 9/11 memorial featuring guest speakers, readings, and art
  • On the 11th at 2 p.m., prior to the football game, all first responders and military personnel, active and retired, will be recognized
  • On the 14th at 7 p.m., the College will host a "(9/11: Twenty Years Later) historical discussion panel on the lower level of the Center for Science and Business.

Muscatine Firefighters Memorial Moment of Silence, Stair Climb

  • September 11 at 7 a.m. at the Muscatine Firefighters Memorial
  • Muscatine city officials, as well as Fire and Police, are inviting residents to a moment of silence at the memorial
  • At 9 a.m., members of the Fire Department will participate in a Stair Climb at the Merrill Hotel, going up an equivalent of 110 stories; the highest points that firefighters were able to climb at the Twin Towers on the day of the attacks.

Adler Theatre's "A Call to Remembrance"

  • September 11 at 7 p.m. at Adler Theatre in Davenport
  • Features live music and guest speaker Mike Lindell, CEO of My Pillow, Inc.
  • Tickets begins at $20, and are available at Ticketmaster.com or at the Adler Theatre Box Office

Mercer County 9-11 Remembrance Ride

  • September 11, beginning at Keithsburg Fire Department; signups begins at 9 a.m.
  • The event will begin at 10 a.m. with an opening ceremony, before heading out on the ride
  • Riders will make 10-15 minute stops at various locations in Mercer County, before returning to Keithsburg for a closing ceremony
