Police are currently investigating the death of a 1-year-old girl in the Ashtabula County city of Conneaut.

According to police, the girl was found unresponsive in her bedroom by her 22-year-old mother. suffering from cardiac arrest. Officers arrived at the home on Clark St. around 5:30 a.m. and found the mother holding the child and screaming, "Help my baby!"

"Some of the information that he got was that the mother was banging on the doors, requesting people to call 9-1-1 for her" said detective Michael Sullivan with the Conneaut Police Department.

The young girl, identified by family members as Serenity, later died at Conneaut Brown Memorial Hospital.

"Foul play" is suspected in the girl's death, although neither the Ashtabula County Coroner's Office nor the Conneaut Police Dept. would specify.

Authorities say have talked to both the mother and her 37-year-old boyfriend, but stressed no arrests have been made at this time.

"We'll just investigate it to the fullest and hopefully make someone responsible for the actions that happened."

Wyatt Durey, a neighbor who lives a few doors away from the family, said he was shocked to see police activity outside of his apartment Saturday morning. Durey said the 1-year-old was playing with her family outside the apartment complex just a couple of days ago.

"I think we're all, like, heartbroken," said Durey. "We've all cried here in the parking lot, it's just an emotional time, it really is."

An autopsy will be performed by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.
