One person killed in Ashtabula County crash

Troopers are investigating single-car crash on Austinburg Road.

ASHTABULA COUNTY, Ohio — Ohio Highway Patrol troopers from the Ashtabula post were called to a car crash Sunday night on Austinburg Road near Old Austinburg Road. 

On Monday, troopers say what they know so far is that the driver of a 2017 BMW was eastbound on Austinburg Road and while going around a curve, drove off the right side of the road, hit a ditch, went airborne, and then hit several trees.

The driver of the BMW was 41-year-old Alfred Rojas, Jr. of Ashtabula.

Rojas Jr. was hurt in the crash and taken to a local hospital for his injuries. Due to the severity of the and then transported by a medivac chopper to a hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania. 

Rojas Jr. was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

 A passenger in the car, 27-year-old Xadiel Rivera-Santiago-- also of Ashtabula-- was pronounced deceased at the crash site. 

Troopers say that Rivera-Santiago was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash. 

The crash is currently under investigation. This is a developing story, check back for updates.
