Canton couple beaten with bat by son, his friend during burglary

The two suspects were arrested Monday morning.

CANTON, Ohio -- A Canton woman suffered serious injuries when she and her husband were beaten and burglarized by their adoptive son and his friend.

Police say the burglary happened Sunday evening at the 1200 block of Garfield Avenue SW.

When officers arrived, they found 52-year-old Tammy Hughes unconscious on the front porch with visible head injuries. Inside the home, officers found 66-year-old Gary Hughes with visible injuries.

According to the couple, their adoptive son, 23-year-old Derek Hughes, arrived at the home with his friend, 26-year-old Maurice Jackson. A short time later, police say Jackson began beating the couple with an aluminum bat.

Jackson and Derek Hughes fled the home with a .38-caliber gun, ammunition, keys and a wallet. They were both arrested on High Avenue SW Monday morning and charged with aggravated burglary.

Tammy Hughes was taken to Aultman Hospital in serious condition.
