PHOTOS: Crews battle massive fire at vacant manufacturing building in downtown Canton

While no one was hurt, the structure is considered 'a probable total loss.' Multiple roads and even nearby railroad tracks were closed for a time.

CANTON, Ohio — Crews responded early Wednesday afternoon to a massive fire near downtown Canton.

Witnesses first noticed smoke coming from the now-vacant light manufacturing building on 6th Street Northeast just before 11 a.m. The flames reached every floor of the four-story structure, which is considered "a probable total loss."

As multiple parts of the building collapsed, officials fought the fire "defensively" and even brought in a demolition crew to assist with an emergency tear down. Several area roads were closed, along with the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway tracks that run alongside the facility.

No one was hurt and the fire has since been contained. The Canton Fire Department later released several photos from the scene as well as drone video:

MEDIA RELEASE: Structure Fire at 606 6Th St NE CANTON, Ohio – on Wednesday October 26, 2022 at 1058 hours, the Canton Fire Department responded to a structure fire in a vacant, light manufacturing building at 606 6th St NE. Upon arrival fire and light smoke was observed coming from the roof of the structure. On investigation of the interior of the building it was found to have fire from the first floor to the roof through multiple areas of collapse and holes in the floor caused by decay and previous fires. Due to the hazardous conditions in the building and multiple areas of structural collapse the fire was fought defensively. A demolition crew arrived to assist with exposing hot spots and an emergency tear down. A second alarm was activated and the Stark Fire Department Rehab Unit (FDRU) was called to rehab fire crews. Streets closed were: 5th St NE east from Cherry Ave N to Orchard Ave NE, Orchard Ave NE north from 5th St NE to 6th ST NE, 6th St NE west to Cherry Ave NE from Orchard and Cherry Ave NE between 5th and 6th St NE. The Wheeling Lake Erie railroad tracks next to the building were also closed. There were no reported injuries. The building is owned by Kasapis Properties LLC. It’s value is listed at $114,900.00 and is a probable total loss. The fire is currently under investigation.
