Downtown Cleveland businesses prepare for wave of sports fans

Businesses are ordering more food and drinks ahead of this weekend's ALDS and Browns game.

CLEVELAND — It may be quiet in downtown Cleveland, but in 72 hours, thousands of sports fans will take over the city.

"It's exciting," said Brent Lewanski, owner of The Ivy on West Sixth.

Lewanski told 3News that The Ivy quadrupled their orders ahead of this weekend.

"You are just stocking up," said Lewanski.

The Guardians will face the Yankees in the ALDS Saturday night, followed by a quick turnaround on Sunday as the Browns host the Patriots.

"That means better tips, better sales, you know hotel rooms, hotels are selling out, Uber drivers, all of our fine restaurants, all the bars it's just really great for everyone," said Lewanski.

Some hotels in Cleveland have already sold out, including the Metropolitan at the 9.

"We're all Cleveland fans," said Kenny Didier, general manager of the Metropolitan at the 9.

Didier told 3News they've increased their staff for this upcoming weekend.

"You're sold out and then you've got a lot of people that are sort of loose so then that fills your outlets," said Didier.

The Metropolitan at the 9 has several businesses inside of it, including Adega, the Vault, The Garden of Eden and the Ledger Bar.

Although The Ivy and the Metropolitan at the 9 have increased their staff, employees are sure to reap the benefits.

"When you talk about playoffs it's triple, they're going to make triple the money," said Lewanski. "You're bringing in more staff, you're paying people more and that's a home run right there."

The Ivy will open Sunday for the Browns game as part of the West Sixth tailgate which starts at 9 a.m.

Lewanski told 3News they've quadrupled their food and drink orders ahead of the massive crowds expected this weekend.
