CLEVELAND — If you live in the city of Cleveland and hear fire emergency sirens, don’t be "alarmed."

The Cleveland Division of Fire will sound their alarms for one minute in unison Saturday to remind residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms when they turn their clocks back this weekend. The noisy heads-up will take place tomorrow at 6:05 p.m.

"Working smoke alarms save lives," Mayor Frank G. Jackson said. "As you change your clocks this Saturday, I encourage everyone to also change the batteries in your smoke alarms. It might just save the lives of your loved ones."

Along with changing smoke detector batteries, the department is urging people to review their fire safety plans. Those plans should include two ways to get out of a room and a family meeting spot outside of the home.

The fire division recommends that smoke alarms be placed in every room that a person sleeps and on every floor of a home. If you are a Cleveland resident in need of smoke detector batteries or a smoke detector, fire stations will have a limited supply available or you can call (216) 361-5535 for more information.
