Cleveland gearing up for a huge sports weekend

While the first-place Guardians host the Twins in a pivotal five-game series, the Browns will play their home opener against the Jets on Sunday.

CLEVELAND — Get ready for what's shaping up to be a big weekend for Cleveland sports!

It begins tonight as the first-place Guardians host division rival Minnesota in the first of a five-game series at Progressive Field. Then, the Browns will make their home debut at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday against the New York Jets.

With the playoffs on the horizon, and an opportunity to make history, many agree that this may be the best time of year here in Cleveland.

"The buzz downtown on Sunday is going to be off the charts," says Curtis Danburg, Guardians vice president of communications.

In fact, waking up on Sunday may feel a lot like Christmas morning.

While, the Guardians maintain sole possession of first place in the American League Central, the five-game series with the Twins may make a pivotal point in this season.

"Our magic number is 17," Danburg adds. "Right now, we need the fans' support to make sure that number goes down this weekend and we want to get separation from the Twins."

The Guards hold a three-game edge over the White Sox, while leading Minnesota by four games.

Danburg expects a big turnout for the games this weekend as fans have several opportunities to catch all the action at Progressive Field.

"When you start the season, you want to have meaningful games in mid-September and here we are. So now, it's about protecting our turf," he adds.

But the Guardians are not the only franchise to play a meaningful home game this weekend. The Browns have a chance to make a little history and start the season 2-0 for the first time since 1993.

"There's nothing better when all three teams are performing at a high level and we have a great opportunity now," says Danburg.

If you are going to spend your Sunday morning at the Muni Lot, here are a few things to remember:

  • There are no open pit fires allowed.
  • You have to use a propane grill.
  • Of course, there's no alcohol permitted.
  • You cannot go back and forth once you are in the lot.
