Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson cites lack of resources as reason for delay in COVID-19 case reports

Mayor Jackson's press briefing will be streamed live on the City of Cleveland Facebook page.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson held a press briefing Tuesday afternoon to address the city's spike in Coronavirus cases.

The briefing comes on the heels of officials failing to provide the latest Coronavirus numbers on Sunday or Monday due to an "unprecedented surge" in the number of cases.

"Due to the remarkably high number of cases reported over the last two days, the Cleveland Department of Public Health is unable to provide the daily COVID-19 data report at this time," officials said in a press release.

The City of Cleveland Health Department receives its COVID-19 case information from the Ohio Department of Health's disease reporting system. Once received, each case must then be researched and reviewed, causing the delay according to Mayor Jackson.

"We're going through anywhere between 150 records to confirm if they belong to Cleveland to 200 new records that are in there and then we do this on a daily basis," said Brian Kemball, City of Cleveland Interim Health Director

According to Jackson, the city is looking to hire more staff and reallocate current resources to rectify the issue.

Not all cities report daily cases but many do, including Columbus and Cincinnati, which have done so without interruption.

The mayor said the city hopes to release numbers by end of day Tuesday containing at least Sunday's figures.

As the state continues its fight against the ongoing pandemic, Gov. DeWine, in a press briefing Tuesday, announced a 10 p.m. curfew in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19.

According to DeWine, the curfew will be in effect from 10 p.m.-5 a.m. over a three-week span. During that time, businesses will be required to be closed and citizens will be expected to be as their residences.

DeWine's new restrictions come amid a recent surge in Ohio's coronavirus numbers. On Tuesday, Ohio reported 7,079 new coronavirus cases, 368 hospital admissions, 27 ICU admissions and 30 new deaths, with a 21-day average of 5,224 new daily coronavirus cases.
