Cleveland Metroparks Zoo reveals plans & safety precautions for June 17 reopening

The zoo will be open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CLEVELAND — Its been three months since the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo closed its gates amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, zoo officials announced their plans to reopen Wednesday, June 17. However, like so many other attractions reopening in Ohio, visits to the zoo will look a lot different.

The greatest change coming to the facility is limiting capacity to 75 percent. To help with that change, the zoo is requiring all visitors to make a reservation in advance. Reservations can be made online and at the box office.

“We can’t wait to reopen our zoo to our conservation community after three months,” said Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Executive Director Dr. Chris Kuhar. “While guests can expect to see many of their favorite animals and attractions including the brand new Daniel Maltz Rhino Reserve, we will have several safety measures to help protect our staff, guests and animals.”

For safety and sanitation, hand-washing stations have been installed across zoo grounds, zoo employees will be sanitizing high-touch area every hour.

Additionally, while the zoo encourages guests to follow guidelines outlined by the CDC and use face coverings, they are not required. Employees will be required to wear face coverings.

As a precaution, the following attractions and services will remain closed:

  • The RainForest
  • All playground areas
  • The Contact Yard and Camel Ride experience
  • Tram service
  • Interiors of certain buildings including the Primate, Cat & Aquatics building and Sarah Allison Steffee Center may be closed at times depending on capacity or staff limitations.
