Cleveland Zoo announces birth of sloth bear cub

Can you handle the cuteness?

New life has joined the Cleveland Zoo just in time for spring.

The zoo on Wednesday announced the birth of a sloth bear cub, marking the first sloth bear birth at the zoo in 30 years.

The cub, whose sex has not been determined, was born Jan. 14 to 4-year-old mother Shiva and 13-year-old father Balawat.

The zoo says the cub currently weighs about six pounds and is learning how to walk. The cub and its mother will remain in their den for several more weeks.

Naming opportunities for the cub will come later.

Sloth bears, which are considered a vulnerable species, can grow to weigh up to 300 pounds. The zoo says they exhibit several distinct behaviors, such as sloth bear cubs, who ride on their mothers' backs for their first six months.
