Community offers support to mother of 9-year-old girl fatally shot on Cleveland's east side

Investigators say they are making progress in the case but at this point, no arrests have been made.

CLEVELAND -- A memorial formed Thursday evening on Lee Road and Harvard Avenue to remember Saniyah Nicholson.

The 9-year-old was fatally shot Wednesday during a shootout on the city's east side.

Area business owner, Todd Averytt, spoke out about the tragedy.

"You don't want to hearing that time heals all wounds, but some wounds time doesn't heal."

Saniyah's mother, Marshawnette Daniels, told WKYC that her wound will never heal -- saying she's been awake for 35 straight hours.

Every time she closes her eyes, she says she sees her beautiful daughter, Saniyah.

Daniels is holding onto her faith and holding out hope that her daughter's killers are brought to justice.

Meanwhile, support for the family comes outside of DNA Level C Boxing Gym, where Saniyah was killed.

It's where people continue to leave flowers and balloons.

Ra'Sheen Ali's owns DNA and says Saniyah's mother was there to pick up her son who boxes at the gym.

Saniyah was waiting in the car with her sister when the gunfire started around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"I told everybody to get down. We all got down and ducked for cover. Nookie start running in crying, saying she got hit. She got hit," said Ali.

It was almost as if time stopped while Ali rushed to Saniyah's side.

"She was just slumped over and I thought the best thing was to hold her and just pray and just ask the Lord to help her," he said.

Police say the shooters were shooting at each other on Lee Road and Cloverside Avenue.

Investigators say they are making progress in the case, but at this point no arrests have been made.

"Turn yourself in," Ali said. "Y'all know what y'all did. Let's bring some closure to the Daniels' family."
