Jump in for a swim! 'Good' water quality reported at Lake Erie beaches ahead of hot weekend

The water quality for Edgewater Beach and Villa Angela Beach is listed as 'good.'

CLEVELAND — We’ve got a hot and muggy weekend ahead with temperatures near 90 degrees throughout Northeast Ohio. If you’re looking for a nice way to cool down, it’s the perfect opportunity to go for a swim.

Officials with the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District said the water quality is listed as “good” at some of Lake Erie’s most popular swim spots.

Here are the water quality test results for Friday, Aug. 27:

  • Edgewater Beach: Good. The percent exceedance probability of the bacteriological criteria for Edgewater Beach is 15.1%. The predicted E. coli concentration for Edgewater Beach is 20 MPN/100mL. Edgewater Beach Threshold: 70 MPN/100mL.
  • Villa Angela Beach: Good. The percent exceedance probability of the bacteriological criteria for Villa Angela Beach is 14.9%. The predicted E. coli concentration for Villa Angela Beach is 23 MPN/100mL. Villa Angela Beach Threshold: 100 MPN/100mL.

“The percent probability that a beach will exceed the set threshold is calculated by the Virtual Beach 3.0 software based on beach conditions measured during sample collection,” the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District explains in a press release. “When the percent probability generated by Virtual Beach 3.0 exceeds 50 percent, the true E. coli concentration is expected to exceed the Bathing Water Recreational Criteria of 235 MPN/100mL. Increasing percent probability indicates an increased likelihood of a true exceedance of the recreational criteria and vice versa.”
