Girl with rare condition throws out first pitch at Cleveland Indians game

She has become an all-star in her own right.

When it comes to professional baseball games, 8-year old Hailey Dawson heads straight for the field.

She has become an all-star in her own right.

“Bleacher Report did a video on me,” Dawson said. “The baseball teams were asking if I could throw the pitch out for them.”

Hailey was born with a relatively rare condition called Poland’s Syndrome.

“Poland’s Syndrome is about the 7th to 8th week of gestation,” her mother, Yong Dawson, said. “There’s a lack of blood supply to her pectoral area.”

It effects people differently.

“Some people have webbed-fingers, some people have short fingers. And Hailey got the ‘lucky one’ and the three middle fingers are missing and then she has a small thumb and a small pinkie,” Dawson said, adding it affects about one in every 100,000 people.

At one time, Hailey’s hand might have been of little use, but not anymore.

Doctors helped create a so-called “robotic hand” for her using a 3-D printer.

“It’s about a couple of hundred for materials. It’s the labor that’s intensive,” Yong Dawson said.

It allows Hailey to grip and throw a baseball and on Saturday night, she threw out the opening pitch at the Indians’ game.

It was her 8th opening toss for a major league team. Her goal is to hit every ballpark by the end of the season.

Her family lives in Las Vegas and they say United Airlines has helped with airfare.
