July death of 1-year-old on Cleveland's southeast side ruled accidental

She was ruled to have died from positional asphyxia.

CLEVELAND — The death of a 1-year-old girl on Cleveland's southeast side back in July has been ruled accidental, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner confirms.

The child, identified as Sapphire Alisia Marie Jolly, was ruled to have died from positional asphyxia, meaning whatever position her body was in prevented her from breathing. While officials have not specified how this happened, they did stress they do not believe it was on purpose.

Sapphire died inside her home on the 9900 block of Kinsman Road back on July 21. She was later pronounced dead at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

Homicide detectives were called in to investigate. However, the Cleveland Division of Police says this is protocol for all child fatalities.
