Medical examiner: 'No indication of suspicious circumstances' in death of infant in Cleveland daycare case

The state of Ohio has suspended the license of Nana's Home Daycare while it investigates the death of Di'Yanni Griffin.

CLEVELAND — The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has released a preliminary statement in the case of Di'Yanni Griffin, the infant whose mother claimed stopped breathing while at a Cleveland daycare last week.

"The complete investigation of this case may take weeks before a final cause of death is available, but there is no indication of suspicious circumstances at this time," reports Dr. Thomas Gilson.

Meanwhile, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services confirmed Monday that it has suspended the license of Nana's Home Daycare on Giddings Road. The daycare will not be allowed to operate during an investigation by public children's services.

Taylor Bush said she picked up Di'Yanni Tuesday afternoon and noticed her baby was not moving. After calling 911, she says doctors at the hospital told her Di'Yanni had stopped breathing "a long time ago."

The daycare's owner, Danielle Townsend, was not there at the time, leaving her sister in charge. Townsend told WKYC that Di'Yanni was still breathing when Taylor Bush picked her up.

"The baby was already sick. We told the young girl, Taylor Bush, to take the baby to the doctor," Townsend said last week. "She’s a young, unfit parent—period."

Records reveal a long list of violations at the daycare, including no first aid kit, hazardous outdoor conditions and an unsanitary bathroom without toilet paper.

Providers were also behind on first aid and CPR certifications, immunizations and insurance.
