Dateline to explore mysterious murder of Bay Village 10-year-old Amy Mihaljevic

3News' Sara Shookman spoke with 'Dateline' Reporter Josh Mankiewicz about the unsolved case.

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — What happened to Amy?

Northeast Ohioans have been asking that question for three decades since Amy Mihaljevic first disappeared from Bay Village in October 1989.

Friday night, Dateline NBC retraces steps that day alongside investigators and her family.

On October 27, 1989, an unknown caller lured Amy to a nearby shopping center to buy a gift for her mother. Police believe that was Amy’s killer. Her body was found a few months later in an Ashland County field.

Bay Village Police and the FBI have collected more than 10,000 tips, conducted 30,000 interviews, and put more than 100,000 man-hours into the case. The hour-long episode focuses in on small details of those first days, and the physical evidence that, along with the right tip, could solve the whole thing.

Dateline Reporter Josh Mankiewicz spoke with 3News Sara Shookman Friday.

“There’s a temptation to refer to a lot of cases like this as cold cases,” he said. “But a cold case suggests that no one is working it. Investigators have been working this pretty much since the day Amy disappeared. One example of that they are really hoping that the evidence we’re going to show you tonight on Dateline might shake loose somebody’s memory and might provide that tip they need.”

You can watch Dateline on Channel 3 at 10/9c.
