Officials approve $9M in Cleveland stadium improvements

The upgrades are being funded through revenue from taxes on beer, wine, liquor and cigarettes.

CLEVELAND — Officials have approved more than $9 million in improvements to Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena and Progressive Field.

Gateway Development Corp., the nonprofit that enforces the sports teams' leases, approved the spending Wednesday.

The price tag for the work on Quicken Loans Arena comes to $7.7 million, while the Progressive Field upgrades total about $2 million.

The upgrades are being funded through revenue from taxes on beer, wine, liquor and cigarettes.

Cleveland Cavaliers spokesperson Tad Carper said most of the Quicken Loans Arena improvements will occur after the NBA and AHL seasons. Carper said the arena will close this summer, much like it did last year. All improvements are expected to be done by September, when Quicken Loans Arena reopens.

Carper said $3.9 million will go toward replacing portions of the ice floor used by the Cleveland Monsters, $3.3 million will bring the arena's restrooms in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and $500,000 will improve lighting.

As for Progressive Field, upgrades include renovating suites and replacing outdoor escalators.

The Cleveland Indians on Sunday confirmed the agreement but declined additional comment.

Gateway is responsible for major capital repairs over about $500,000 at each facility.
