CLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Cleveland is investigating an collision that happened Sunday between the USS Cod and USCGC Morro Bay.
According to officials, the Cod collided with the Coast Guard's ship around 11:30 a.m. while being towed out of Cleveland.
Sunday's departure from Northeast Ohio marks the first time that the Cod has left the area in more than 50 years. The allision did not impede the ship's travel plans, however, and it is now on its way to Erie, Pennsylvania for scheduled repairs.
Officials say that the allision caused only superficial damage to the hull and superstructure of the USCGC Morro Bay.
The matter remains under investigation at this time.

Last week, officials announced that the Cod would make its first departure from Cleveland in 58 years, releasing a statement on Facebook explaining its absence for six to eight weeks.
"We're truly sad to miss out on our visitors coming aboard until we return, but we have to ensure Cod is shipshape for years to come," explained the USS Cod Submarine Memorial's Facebook page.
