Bay Village Anti-Racism Network forms grassroots effort for equality

In a community that is predominantly white, one man and some close neighbors are working to open the conversation about equality. They hope other communities follow.

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — The movement for racial equality is calling a lot of people to action. In Bay Village, a grassroots group called the "Bay Village Anti-Racism Network" has formed.

Every morning, one of the founding members, Terry Coursen carries a sign with a message of equality through the community. He spoke with us as he was walking home from his morning protest.

“I walk through the streets of Bay Village bringing awareness to the issue of the social injustice that is happening in our society, and just kind of making it aware and in my own community. These issues are not absent here.”

Coursen says he's gotten great support from the community. Sometimes it's a honk or a wave, or he's offered water or a snack. Sometimes people even offer to walk with him.

“It's inspiring to know that the community in which I live supports not only myself but the matter in general.”

A large protest was held in Bay Village last month. The founders of the "Bay Village Anti-Racism Network" wanted to make sure that even after this protest ended, the conversation about race and inequality continued. That's when the group was formed.

Their Facebook page has more than 300 members and growing.

Right now, they're in the middle of a "week of action" with different events planned for each day.
