Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter reopens following deaths of 5 dogs

According to the shelter, two of the five dogs that died had compromised immune systems and contracted Parvo virus which turned into respiratory infections, which could not be fought off.

The Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter reopened this weekend. after tests were conducted on dogs that died in their care two weeks ago.

According to the shelter, two of the five dogs that died had compromised immune systems and contracted Parvo virus which turned into respiratory infections, which could not be fought off. These infections became pneumonia, which caused their deaths. It is not believed any other dogs are affected.

Officials say it is likely the other three untested dogs died the same way. It is unknown how the dogs contracted the virus, but all came from the Cleveland city kennel. Parma also shut down the dog portion of its shelter to the public as a precaution.

The shelter in Valley View will opened for business Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
