CLEVELAND — There is a new scam going around that has Cuyahoga County executives worried for citizens.
Scam artists are calling and emailing people to tell them that they are facing fines and jail time for skipping jury duty, and asking for personal information as well as payment to avoid repercussions.
A press release from the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas today says, "most contact between the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court and a prospective juror occurs through the U.S. mail, and any phone contact by legitimate court officials will not include requests for Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or any other sensitive information.
The county is suggesting that if you do receive a phone call or email asking for any personal information, do not give them any information, and report the call to Cuyahoga County officials.
“It is unfortunate that unscrupulous scammers would target people who believe they have missed a chance to perform their civic duty,” said Administrative and Presiding Judge Brendan J. Sheehan. “Jury duty is a vital civic responsibility and should be taken seriously by all citizens.”
