How snowy sidewalks could pose dangers for kids

Mayor urges residents to clean up

CLEVELAND — For those going back to work and school on Tuesday, there is a warning to bundle up.

The National Weather Service points out that exposed skin could experience frostbite in as little as 30 minutes.

Symptoms can include red, pale skin, as well as numbness, stiffness, and in severe cases--blistering.

It prompted Lakewood Mayor Mike Summers to tweet a reminder to shovel sidewalks Monday, since Lakewood is one of only three districts in the state that does not bus its kids.

“You’ve got to push, prod, remind and cajole folks to do their duty as homeowners, which is to clear the way for kids,” he said. “All we need is a little path.”

Devon Orr decided to see whether he could make some money with his friends shoveling in Cleveland Monday night.

But they dressed in layers first.

“I got three jackets on, like three pairs of paints,” Orr said.

His friend, Amaiya Gates, noted the cold weather is not for everyone.

“I was thinking like ‘What if it was a lady with a baby?’ And then, ‘I don’t want her to fall with a baby,’” she said. “The ice is slippery.”
