MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio -- A beloved student athlete at Mayfield High School passed away Wednesday evening.
According to reports, Steven Grieshammer's heart unexpectedly stopped while at swim practice last Sunday.
Medical officials were able to revive him, but Steven remained in a coma at MetroHealth Medical Center until his passing on Wednesday.
The school will have counselors available.
Affectionately known as Stevie, the Mayfield Heights junior was most recently featured in The News Herald for his outstanding accomplishments at the school's sectional and district meets earlier this month.
Chris Lillstrung, who wrote the article, took to Twitter to express his condolences.
The Mayfield Athletic Department also took to Twitter to express their condolences, offering not only support, but message of encouragement.
Members of the school's community have been sharing their condolences and sending support to Steven's family using #StevieStrong.
