Metroparks jogger bites attacker to escape assault

The suspect approached the woman on an exercise trail and grabbed her by the throat.

GARFIELD HEIGHTS – Cleveland Metroparks Rangers are working with Garfield Heights police to find a man who attacked a woman while jogging in the Garfield Park Reservation.

The attack happened on Saturday around 6:45 a.m. Cuyahoga County Crime Stoppers says the suspect approached the 54-year-old woman on an exercise trail and grabbed her by the throat, threatening to kill her if she said anything.

The attacker covered the victims mouth and punched her in the head repeatedly. The women bit the suspect's finger and the man ran off toward the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Chaincraft Road.

The following description of the suspect was provided to investigators:

- Mid-20s to 30 male;

- Approximately 5' 8" tall;

- Thin build;

- Medium length black hair;

- Short beard or goatee;

- Word(s) tattooed above both eyebrows;

- Visible injury to a finger on his right hand;

- Pale green shorts and white V-neck T-shirt;

- Tan leather work boots.

The Garfield Heights police department issued the following statement regarding the incident Monday afternoon:

"Our department assisted the Cleveland Metroparks Rangers with an assault in the Garfield Hts reservation Saturday morning. The Garfield Hts Fire Department EMS squad treated the victim and the police department assisted in searching for the subject at the time of the attack. The rangers are handling the investigation and report. Any questions or media releases are being handled by the Cleveland Metroparks."
