Parma Heights officer released from hospital after shooting

The suspect was killed when officers returned fire.

PARMA -- The Parma Heights police detective who was shot in the leg during a traffic stop last week has been released from the hospital.

Det. Luke Berry left MetroHealth Medical Center on Sunday, according to Parma Heights Acting Police Chief Steve Scharschmidt.

Scharschmidt said Berry is in good spirits and will begin rehabilitation on his left leg, which suffered a shattered femur during the shooting.

Berry underwent surgery last Wednesday after he was shot by a suspect while assisting a Parma police officer during a traffic stop on Stumph Road near Huffman Road.

When the suspect driver stepped out of his car, Berry noticed a handgun tucked inside the driver's waistband, along with two magazines of bullets. Berry alerted the Parma officer of the weapon, and a struggle with the suspect followed.

After the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Jonathan Legg, shot Berry in the leg, both officers returned fire.

Legg died after he was shot several times.
