Parma Heights police detective suffered shattered femur after being shot Wednesday

The suspect was later identified as 29-year-old Jonathan Legg. He later died at University Hospitals Parma.

Officials have identified the Parma Heights police detective who was shot Wednesday afternoon during an altercation with a suspect.

Det. Luke Berry, a four-year veteran of the department, suffered a shattered femur and underwent surgery Thursday at MetroHealth Medical Center, according to Parma Police Capt. Kevin Riley. All indications are that the operation was successful, and Berry is currently recovering.

Riley said in a statement that Det. Berry was assisting Parma Officer Peter Shepetiak in a traffic stop when the suspect shot Berry in the left leg after both officials noticed he had a handgun. Both Berry and Shepetiak returned fire and shot the man several times.

The suspect was later identified as 29-year-old Jonathan Legg. He later died at University Hospitals Parma.

Dash cam video was later released showing the scene in the aftermath. No dash cam video is available of the shooting itself, according to police.

While Officer Shepetiak was not shot, he was also injured in the incident. He is also recovering.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, per protocol.
