Police identify man found dead amid pipe bombs, chemicals in Bay Village home

Police say one of the pipe bombs was live.

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — The Bay Village Police Department is investigating the death of a man at a house on Arlington Circle, where hazardous materials were also discovered.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, officers were dispatched to the home for a report of a man who was in need of assistance. When police arrived, they found the man dead in an upstairs bedroom. They also found items that were "consistent with hazardous materials and devices."

Police on Wednesday released the man's identity as 29-year-old Stephen P Gurley.

Gurley was found by his mother, who attempted to perform CPR on him. Police say he had "physical injuries" on his body.

Neighbors on both sides of the house were asked to leave as a precaution. As of Tuesday evening, the area has been deemed as "secure," and police called the ordeal "an isolated incident."

The Westshore Enforcement Bureau Hazardous Devices Unit has been on scene to assist along with members of the FBI and BCI. According to police, officers found several pipe bombs in Gurley's bedroom. One bomb, which was live, was detonated safely at the Bay Village Police Department.

Nothing exploded inside the home.

Police also found several chemicals inside the home. Though the chemicals were not hazardous on their own, police say they posed a threat if properly combined. Police say most can be purchased over-the-counter.

The investigation is ongoing. A cause of death has not yet been determined.
