Court sets new trial date for driver accused of hit-and-run crash that killed Mentor officer

His trial is scheduled to begin in March.

MENTOR -- A new trial date has been set for the man accused of killing a Mentor police officer in a hit-and-run crash in June.

A jury trial for Brian Anthony, 24, is scheduled to begin March 11, though a motion hearing is scheduled for Dec. 19, court records state.

Anthony, a Kirtland resident, faces aggravated vehicular homicide charges in the death of Mentor officer Mathew Mazany. Anthony is also accused of driving under the influence and failing to stop following a crash.

Prosecutors allege that blood and urine samples showed Anthony had heroin and ethanol in his system, along with morphine, codeine and fentanyl.

Police say Anthony was behind the wheel of a Jeep Wrangler that struck and killed Mazany, who was assisting with an unrelated traffic stop on state Route 2 June 24. Anthony allegedly fled the scene and his vehicle was later found at Mentor Lagoons Marina.

Anthony previously pleaded not guilty to the original charges connected to the case, including leaving the scene of a crash and tampering with evidence.
