LES CAYES, Haiti — The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Haiti over the weekend has risen to 1,419, while the number of injured people has grown to 6,000, the Caribbean nation’s Civil Protection Agency said Monday.
The earthquake destroyed thousands of homes, offices, homes, churches and other structures. And the devastation could soon worsen with the coming of Tropical Depression Grace, predicted to reach Haiti on Monday night with strong winds, heavy rain, mudslides and flash flooding. Rainfall could reach 15 inches (38 centimeters) in some areas.
Thousands are searching and waiting to hear from their loved ones, including Bishop Gerard Mirbel, who is from Haiti. He came to the United States 38 years ago and now leads the Miracle Revival Ministry Assemblies of God in Painesville. He's lived through earthquakes.
“People read it in the newspaper, people watch it on television, I lived it, I used to sit in the living room in my house and see the earthquake and things falling left and right,” said Bishop Mirbel.
After the most recent earthquake, his family in Haiti is living through another nightmare.
“I got a call just a few hours ago and it is so hot, 120 degrees, that is unbearable," he says.
At the earthquake's epicenter, beds are set up outside, hooked up to IVs under the hot sun and as it stands now more than 37,000 homes damaged or destroyed.
Bishop Mirbel says we're now seeing a similar story from the massive earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010.
“In 2010, I lost a cousin who was a Catholic Archbishop,” said Bishop Mirbel. “Prayer is number one. They all need prayer. They really need prayer.”
