Man shot in Painesville is Gates Mills police officer; wife was shooter, later died by suicide

Officer Dylan Hustosky was in surgery as of the time of Tuesday's press conference.

PAINESVILLE — The man who was shot in Lake County Monday evening is a Gates Milles police officer, and authorities say his wife pulled the trigger before taking her own life.

Chief Dan Waterman detailed the events of yesterday's incident in a press conference Monday afternoon, saying Officer Dylan Hustosky of Cedarbrook Drive called 911 around 4:15 p.m. saying, "My wife just shot me through the door." Officer Hustosky was found minutes later with two bullets in his left arm, and after officials unsuccessfully attempted to make contact with his wife Kayleigh before calling in the county SWAT team.

After robots and drones initially entered the home, authorities later found 29-year-old Kayleigh upstairs around 7:30 p.m. with a single fatal gunshot wound. Chief Waterman says preliminary information indicates her death was by suicide.

Officer Hustosky was taken to Tri-Point Medical Center and later transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center. Gates Mills Police Chief Gregg Minichello said he was in surgery as of the time of the press conference, and offered "thoughts and prayers" for him.

Dylan and Kayleigh Hustosky had been married for roughly two and a half years. Authorities say they have a 3-year-old child who was with a relative in Stow at the time of the shooting.

The incident remains under investigation.
