Painesville Twp. Fire Department mourns death of retired accelerant detection K-9

K-9 Tahoe served the department for 7 years as an accelerant detection canine before retiring in 2014.

PAINESVILLE TWP. – The Painesville Township Fire Department is mourning the loss of a former member of the department.

In a Facebook post Sunday night Lt. Gordon Thompson said his former K-9 partner Tahoe had died.

Tahoe was an Accelerant Detection Canine for the department for 7 years before retiring in May 2014.

Tahoe was born in 2005 as part of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection breeding program but was transferred to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for training.

In his post, Lt. Thompson thanked the department, co-workers, other departments and his family, saying, “We all lost a piece of our hearts.”

Several other Lake County departments joined Painesville Township Fire Department in expressing their appreciation for Tahoe’s service and their condolences for the family.
