Amherst Police honor fellow officer with blood drive

LifeShare says the blood donated will help nearly 300 people here in Northeast Ohio.

Amherst Police gave back to the blood bank that helped save one of their own.

They held a blood drive on Thursday to help replenish the blood used to help save Officer J.R. Ptacek. The SWAT officer was shot during a standoff in Sheffield Lake back on May 31.

Officer Ptacek is still in the hospital, listed in serious condition. His colleagues told us he's grateful for the support.

"J.R. is just an awesome guy," says Lt. Dan Makruski. "He's one of the nicest people you will ever meet in this world. He's a very humble guy, appreciative, and if he could be here today, he would. But he's where he needs to be getting better and we'll go from there."

About 100 people showed up to Thursday's event.
