Sheffield Brookside High School employee tests positive for coronavirus

'Unfortunately we knew it was only a matter of time before this could happen.'

SHEFFIELD LAKE, Ohio — An employee for Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City Schools in Lorain County has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), the district announced Friday.

The person works at Brookside High School (which also houses the middle school), and officials say Lorain County Public Health will be contacting people who may have been directly exposed. All schools in the district as well as Ohio have been closed by the order of Gov. Mike DeWine, and will remain so for at least the next two weeks.

"Unfortunately we knew it was only a matter of time before this could happen," the district said in a statement on Facebook. "Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and also with all of our families at this time."

No details on the person's exact condition have been released. Ohio currently has 169 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including 10 in Lorain County.

Officials are reminding residents to continue to take measures such as washing their hands, staying home when they are sick, and avoiding large gatherings. Symptoms of coronavirus include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath.
