Members of the Elyria City School District are in a state of grief following the loss of Franklin Elementary School Principal Lisa Licht, who died of natural causes Wednesday at University Hospitals in Cleveland.
In a statement released following her passing, the district called Licht "the greatest of advocates for children and public education, and specifically, education in Elyria."
“Our hearts are broken," Superintendent Thomas Jama said. "Lisa was through and through an Elyria Pioneer. She led with compassion, kindness, strength and pure love and ultimate respect for the families and community she served.”
Licht spent more than 20 years in Elyria and is survived by her son, Steven, who is set to graduate from Elyria High School in June.
Students at Franklin Elementary were notified of Licht's death today and counselors have been made available. A celebration of her life will be held at the school during a later date.
